Fates Warning’s second album, The Spectre Within is an ambitious sci-fi fantasy spanning 50 minutes across just seven wide-screen songs. It also marks the moment when the prog-metal veterans — who, in their early days, were mocked as “Iron Maiden Junior” — truly came into their own. Bringing the album extra notoriety, its centerpiece, “Kyrie Eleison,” notably appears on the Brian Slagel-curated soundtrack to the cult Eighties movie River’s Edge, starring Keanu Reeves, Crispin Glover and Dennis Hopper.
