Black Sabbath had already invented heavy metal by the time 1973 rolled around, so Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the sound of them basking in their own glorious creation. The band’s fourth LP takes the experimental additions of Vol. 4 a step further, adding a bevy of synths and strings, twinges of melodic sweetness like the cherubic “Fluff,” and more robust song structures packed with graceful yet unexpected transitions. It’s the OG iteration of Sabbath at their most musical and artful, and the riffs still slay.
