Baker’s sophomore LP Turn On the Lights and Bridgers’ debut Stranger in the Alps swept best-of-2017 lists, while Dacus’ meditation on loss, Historian, has already become one of 2018’s most lauded releases. “A long time ago, before I even met Phoebe, Julien mentioned that she had a pipe dream of starting a band with both of us,” says Dacus. “Then we booked this tour and decided the time was right.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“It seemed obvious to record a 7-inch for tour, although many adult men will try to take credit for the idea,” adds Bridgers. “When we got together, we had way more songs than we expected and worked so well together, that we decided to make a full EP.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn early June of 2018, they practiced and wrote for a day before holing up in Los Angeles’ storied Sound City studios, eventually taking the EP to Bushwick for mastering courtesy of Heba Kadry (Björk, Slowdive, Beach House). Each brought one finished song and one idea to boygenius, and though all six songs were fleshed out and finalized together, each reflects the sensibilities of its initial author. With Bright Eyes, Conor gave young people around the world hushed singer\/songwriter songs that captured all of the uncontrollable emotions they were dealing with, and with her 2017 debut album \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eStranger in the Alps\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (which Conor also guests on), Phoebe did the same. Phoebe just has that ability to write songs where the words find clever ways to mirror universal feelings, and the melancholic melodies are the perfect vessel to deliver them with. When Phoebe sang \"I have emotional motion sickness \/ Somebody roll the windows down,\" she came out with a line as iconic as anything any of the Away Message-era emo bands wrote in the previous decade. And that's far from the only quotable one-liner that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eStranger\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e has to offer. It's one of those albums where almost every song was my favorite at one point or another, and I imagine I'm not alone in feeling this. It established her as a masterful songwriter \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eand\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e a masterful interpreter -- when she covers Mark Kozelek's \"You Missed My Heart\" as the penultimate track, she not only entirely makes it her own, she may have bested the original. Though this list unsurprisingly has more bands than solo artists, emo needs that quiet singer\/songwriter, that heartbreaker who gets thousands of people singing every word as if they were their own.
